How commission is worked out
Commission is a share of sales paid to the seller, set as a percentage. This commission calculator multiplies the sales amount by the percent commission rate to give the commission earned, then adds any base pay for your total commission pay. It is the flat-rate case, which covers most straightforward sales commission arrangements.
Commission with a base salary
Many roles pay a base salary plus commission. The base is fixed and the commission moves with your sales, so total pay is the two added together. Entering a base here shows both the commission on its own and the combined total, which is useful for comparing offers or projecting a good month against a slow one.
Beyond flat-rate commission
Real commission plans can be more involved than a single rate. Some use tiers, where the rate rises once you pass a target. Some have caps, draws against future commission, or split rates for different products. This tool handles the common flat-rate case; for a tiered plan, work out each tier separately and add them. Always check your own commission agreement for the exact terms.
An estimate, not financial advice
This is a flat-rate calculation from the figures you enter, before any tax. Your actual pay depends on your plan's rules and your local tax, so treat it as a guide. This is not financial advice.
FAQ
How do I calculate commission?
Multiply the sales amount by the commission rate as a percentage. For example, 5% on 20,000 in sales is 1,000. Add any base pay for your total earnings.
How does commission with a base salary work?
Your total is the fixed base plus the commission on your sales. Enter both and the tool shows the commission alone and the combined total.
Can it handle tiered commission?
Not directly. It calculates a single flat rate. For a tiered plan, compute the commission for each tier and add them together.
Is commission taxed?
Usually yes, like other income, but the rules depend on your country. This tool shows commission before tax, so check your local rates for the after-tax figure.
Is my information private?
Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
