What this grade calculator answers

This is the "what do I need on the final" question. You put in your grade so far, your target for the course, and the share of the grade the final carries, and it tells you the score you must get on that final. It is the final grade calculator you reach for in the last week of a class.

How the math works

Your grade so far counts for the rest of the course, which is 100 minus the final's weight. The final makes up the rest. The tool solves for the final score that lifts your weighted total to your target. If that score comes out above 100, the target is out of reach on the final alone, and you would need extra credit.

Needed score by final weight

Say you are going in at 85% and want 88% overall. Here is the grade needed on the final for a few common weights. A heavier final does more of the work, so the needed score falls.

FAQ

What do I need on the final to get an A?

Set your target to the A cutoff, usually 90%, and type your current grade and the final's weight. The tool shows the exact score you need.

How is the weighted grade worked out?

Your current grade is multiplied by 100 minus the final's weight, the final score by its weight, and the two are added. This calculator finds the final score that makes that total equal your target.

What if the needed score is over 100?

Then the target cannot be reached on the final by itself. You would need extra credit or a higher score elsewhere. The tool tells you when this happens.

Can I use it for any test, not just a final?

Yes. Put that test's weight in the "worth" box. It works as a test grade calculator for any single weighted assessment.
