Weighted and unweighted GPA
Two GPA numbers show at once. Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale, where an A is 4.0 no matter the class. Weighted GPA gives harder classes a boost: an honors class adds 0.5 and an AP or IB class adds 1.0, so an A in an AP class is worth 5.0. Colleges see both, so it helps to know each. The tool works for a high school GPA or a college GPA, and for a single term or your cumulative GPA across terms.
The grade point scale
Each letter grade maps to points on the standard 4.0 scale:

Your grade point average is the sum of each class's points times its credits, divided by the total credits. Credits make a heavy class count more than a light one.
A worked example
Say you took three classes: an A in a 3-credit regular class, a B+ in a 4-credit regular class, and an A- in a 3-credit honors class.
- Unweighted: (4.0 × 3) + (3.3 × 4) + (3.7 × 3) = 36.3, divided by 10 credits, gives a 3.63 GPA.
- Weighted: the honors A- becomes 3.7 + 0.5 = 4.2, so the total is 37.8, divided by 10 credits, gives a 3.78 GPA.
FAQ
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA caps every class at 4.0. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB classes, so a tough schedule can push a weighted GPA above 4.0.
How is grade point average calculated?
Multiply each class's grade points by its credits, add those up, then divide by the total credits. This calculator does it for you as you type.
How do I find my cumulative GPA?
Add a row for every class across all your terms, with its grade and credits. The result is your cumulative GPA. You can copy the link to come back to the same set later.
Does it work for high school and college?
Yes. The 4.0 scale is the same. Use the class-type menu for honors or AP classes to get a weighted high school GPA, or leave every class as regular for a straight college GPA.
