How to resize an image

Width, height, and aspect ratio

Aspect ratio is the link between width and height. With the ratio locked, changing the width sets the height for you, so the image keeps its shape and never looks squashed. Untick the box only if you want to force an exact width and height, and accept that the picture may stretch.

Smaller pixels means a smaller file

Making an image fewer pixels wide also makes the file smaller, often by a lot. This is the right tool when a photo is both too large on screen and too heavy to upload. If you only want a smaller file but the same pixel size, use a compress tool instead.

You cannot add detail by upscaling

Making an image larger than its original size does not add real detail. The tool spreads the existing pixels over a bigger area, which can look soft or blocky. Resize down freely, but be careful resizing up, since the result rarely looks as sharp as a photo taken at that size.
