How to work out VAT

  1. Choose Add VAT or Remove VAT.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Enter the VAT rate as a percent.
  4. See the net, the VAT, and the gross price at once.

Add VAT or remove VAT

Add VAT starts from a price before tax, the net, and works out the tax and the final price, the gross. Remove VAT does the reverse: you enter a price that already includes tax and it finds the tax hidden inside and the price before tax. Both are common, and mixing them up is the usual mistake.

Why removing VAT is not just subtracting

To remove VAT you divide by one plus the rate, not subtract the rate. At a 20% rate, the net of a 120 gross is 120 divided by 1.2, which is 100, so the VAT is 20. If you wrongly took 20% off 120 you would get 96, which is too low. The tool does the correct division for you.

Any rate works

VAT rates differ by country and by product. The United Kingdom uses 20% as its standard rate, while other places set their own. The rate box lets you enter whatever applies to you, so the tool fits any country or a reduced rate.

Standard VAT rates in some countries

VAT rates differ by country and change over time, so check the current rate for your country before you rely on a figure. As a rough guide, here are recent standard rates:

Country Standard VAT rate
United Kingdom 20%
Germany 19%
France 20%
Italy 22%
Spain 21%
Netherlands 21%
Ireland 23%
Poland 23%

FAQ

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net is the price before VAT. Gross is the price after VAT is added. The VAT is the difference between them.

How do I take VAT out of a price?

Choose Remove VAT and enter the price that includes tax. The tool divides by one plus the rate to find the net and the VAT.

Why can't I just subtract the rate to remove VAT?

Because the VAT was added to the smaller net, not the larger gross. Subtracting the rate from the gross removes too much. You must divide instead.

What VAT rate should I use?

Use the rate that applies where you are. The standard rate in the UK is 20%, but many places and some goods use different rates.

Is my data private?

Yes. The math runs in your browser and nothing is saved.

Does this work for GST and sales tax too?

Yes. GST and sales tax work the same way as VAT: a percentage on top of the net price. Set your local rate and the numbers fit all three. The remove mode is what accountants call reverse VAT, pulling the net price out of a gross amount.
